Happy New Year--Time to Organize

Hello and welcome to 2012 (wha???)! Hopefully the new year is treating you well so far.

The new year is always such a refreshing time for me. It's a great time to take personal inventory. I'm not really one for making "resolutions" (that seems like a guaranteed way to set yourself up for failure), but I do like to set a goal or two (or twenty). I've been a bit busy, so I haven't had time to sit down a do my goal setting for the year (at least on paper), but I have decided that focusing on one major goal will affect so many aspects of my life and help me create that balance we all strive for...that goal is...

ORGANIZATION (in my personal life)! By doing and successfully completing and maintaining this goal, I will be able to create time to work on reach those other goals I've been thinking about.

Here are my tips to organizing (mostly to myself):

1. First and foremost: KNOW THY SELF; don't doom yourself but creating a system that is unattainable. For example: Don't go out and spend a ton (or even a little) money on creating a filing system with labels and such if you know you are more of a paper stacker.

2. PURGE. Hi, my name is Ashleigh and I'm a hoarder. For some reason, I'm deathly afraid to get rid of anything that I may be able to use in the future or if it has any use at all, I just have the hardest time throwing away something that isn't broken or is still usable (I feel like I might have lived through the Great Depression in my previous life). But--every once in a while (about twice a year) I get a bug in my ear and just start tossing. It's actually a very cleansing process and I probably need to do it every other month. Only a few times have I tossed something I actually needed (or wanted)...but hey, it's just stuff, right?

3. ONE room AT A TIME. This is a hard one, at least for me...just ask the Mister. .I like to call it multi-tasking, but regardless....I always seem to start something and get distracted having a pile of started projects and actually completing a few.

A Modern Christmas

Now that it's officially December, I feel like I can talk about Chirstmas and decoration without feeling like I'm jumping the gun or caving to retail influences. I'm all about decorating for the holidays or Christmas, as I like to call it and changing your color scheme is one way to make your decor a bit more modern.

Last year, I decided to change it up a bit and deviate from the traditional red and green scheme and go with blue, gold (or yellow) and just a touch of silver. The red and green just wasn't doing it for me anymore, not to mention it clashed terribly with my favorite piece and driving inspiration for the decor in my house, a yellow and cream Greek key wool dhurrie in my dining room. I'm also not a fan of a bunch of Christmas kitsch. For me, less is more.

Anyway...here are a few modern inspiration rooms for your viewing pleasure.

Sunday Shopping | Kevin O'Brien Studio

As much as I hate to admit it, I really enjoy selecting or designing custom pillows for a project. I'm not saying you need a ba-zillion pillows strewn about (YOU DON'T!), but a few carefully selected pillows can really pull a room together. And if you don't have the budget for custom pillows (where the options are virtually endless) there are so many amazing choices out there.

One of those choices is Kevin O'Brien Studio. Based in Philadelphia, Kevin O'Brien Studio, began when Kevin bought what he thought was silk but was actually "...20 yards of the finest polyester (the salesman figured he wouldn’t know the difference). He painted on it anyway and they took it to Barney’s NY and secured their first order. Barney’s suggested that since they had an actual order maybe they could splurge for some real silk." Fifteen years later, the business is thriving, offering a line of luxe pillows, bedding/throws, scarves/shawls, rugs and fabric by the yard.

Friday Favorites | Design*Sponge at Home (the book!)

Grace Bonney's blog, Design*Sponge, has always been a go to favorite. Easily top ten...in all reality...more like top 5. Her easy going approach to design and DIY is what I think her readers really relate to on a personal level. So now that she's published her first book Design*Sponge at Home, you can unplug and flip through the nearly 400 pages of pretty pictures and great ideas. And when not in use, the gorgeous red-orange cover makes the perfect addition to your stack of book on the coffee table.

Friday Favorites | Potted Succulents

I'm finishing up one of our projects (selecting accessories and art) and along with those we've chosen some beautiful succulents which, in my opinion, are living sculptures. The shapes and color palettes are just plain beautiful. What's more...they are an excellent choice if you don't have the greenest of thumbs.

Friday Favorites | The Color Purple

The color purple was my very favorite color when I was seven. I had a purple sweater and purple corduroy pants that I wore almost all the time. My infatuation with the color has waned a bit over the years (i.e., I don't step out in full purple glory anymore), but I'm always attracted to the color and how comforting it its.

Purple is pretty ubiquitous in the fall, one of those jewel tones that makes so much sense as the days get shorter and cooler. The color purple is so flexible on the lighter side it is so feminine and soft. In it's darker hues it's more masculine, the color of royalty. Here are a few purple rooms...

What can I possibly say that isn't being said on a million other blogs this morning?

Thank you, Steve Jobs, for changing my life. You made it easier, prettier and more fun! Ever since I learned to program a growing flower on an Apple IIe in third grade there hasn't been a moment when an Apple product was more than 20 feet away from me. In design school, when we were asked to bring something to class that exemplified great design, I simply reached in my purse for my iPhone. You taught me that form doesn't necessarily follow function...instead, that they should exist in equal measure at all times. You contributed so much to this gigantic world of ours and found ingenius ways to shrink it down to fit in our pockets.

With the rest of the world, I mourn your loss, my prayers are with your family. Thanks for being an inspiration and also for everything you've given us.

Friday Favorites | Fresh Flowers

I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy fresh flowers. They liven up any room and always put a smile on my face. Imagine these rooms without the flowers...the flowers are that little something extra that reminds me to enjoy life.

I can't tell what these are...any ideas?

I can't tell what these little bluish purple beauties are either...but they are the perfect addition to this little office.

It's nice to treat yourself to a special bouquet now and again, but it doesn't always have to be a budget buster. Keep and eye out at your favorite grocer for their weekly flower specials (Trader Joe's always has good ones). And if the flower of the week isn't exactly your favorite, remember, a decent size arrangement of the most simple flower can look nice (one color + all the same flower = simple and beautiful). Even carnations can look nice if you keep it all one color.

Friday Favorites | Nouvelle Candles

I'm not a huge candle person. And by that I mean I don't love any and all candles. I love the light and ambiance white unscented candles bring to a party or a nice night at home with my husband. And a nicely fragrant candle (not sickening sweet or artificial) can be just what the doctor order to relax and unwind after a long day.

One of my favorite candles is by Nouvelle, their Black Mission Fig (their Crepe Myrtle is also good and their best seller). The scent is just right, the unmistakable aroma of sun-ripened fig with light green fruit notes blended in perfect harmony. Delicious. They last a long time and they don't smoke. Loving made in Louisiana. I buy mine at HW Home...but you can also find them at Amazon.

Lately, I've been obsessed with finding a bench for my Louis-inspired (self-designed and expertly crafted by my dad - our in-house woodworking guru) 60" square dining table. Friday Favorites | Alameda Antique Faire & Vintage McCoy

If you're anything like me (and trust me, you are), you love a good flea market. Antique meets kitch, trash meets treasure... there is just something about the air of possibility that makes my heart go pitter pat. Every first Sunday in Alameda, CA there is a flea market (ahem, Antiques Faire...with an 'e') to beat the band.

I know the next faire isn't until October, but when it comes I'll be hunting McCoy bisque. Five years ago, a friend used nothing but vintage McCoy vases to hold her wedding flowers at the ceremony and reception, and then gave them as favors. I love mine more than words and I want some more. I gravitate toward the ivory or aqua pieces, but some of the salmon colored ones are luscious.

Friday Favorites | City Park Esplanade Farmer's Market

This is my favorite time of year, so it seems only appropriate to kick off our new feature: Friday Favorites. Friday favorites won't always be about design and decor, but it will always be about enjoying life and living well.

We're nearing the end of the Summer here in Denver, but there's still time to check out my favorite Farmer's Market in Central Denver, City Park Esplanade Fresh Market (Colfax & City Park Esplanade--in front of East High school, across from Tattered Cover) 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays, through October.

Why it's my favorite: it's not as crowded as Cherry Creek's Farmer's Market (ahem plenty of parking and an easy scooter or bike ride from my house) and has everything you're looking for in a farmer's market and leaves out everything you're not (Cherry Creek has a little too much "other stuff"). It's location is also appealing to me...nestled right between historic East High School, beautiful City Park and the redeveloping Colfax corridor (featuring Encore ---great for brunch, Tattered Cover and Twist and Shout).

Sunday Shopping at The Denver Modernism Show | Mid-Century Modern Fab

This weekend in Denver is big in the world of Mid-Century Modern fans, collectors and dealers. It's the Denver Modernism Show and it has everything from a Tiki Lounge to a fashion show and of course lots and lots of great vintage MCM furniture, decor, art and knick-knacks. I snapped a few photos and wanted to share them with you. The show runs thru Sunday (10am-3pm) so if you have some time and love MCM design, I recommend checking them out.

(Still) Addicted: Bar/Bev Carts

I don't have a bar cart but I have a bar table (I'm currently on the hunt for a cart). But in the meantime I'm using an antique dropleaf pembroke table my grandmother bought in Pentworth, Sussex in the spring of 1931 (according to family, the table was around 100 years old when she bought it). Anyhow, I topped it off with a gorgeous handmade wood tray that holds a few of my favorite libations and a few vintage crystal decanters, for those not-so-pretty bottles. They are also so great for those impromptu get-togethers. Even if you don't partake, these carts are a great way to display some of your favorite items.

Mixing Design Styles and Old and New

My tastes are always changing, though I like to think I'm continuing to refine them. Some things have remained a constant; I have always appreciated most if not all design periods, quality construction and materials, beautiful architectural details and good natural lighting. I think it must have really solidified for me when my husband and and I bought our old Folk Victorian in Denver.

I loved the history of the house, 120 years old and in relatively great condition (original floors and fantastic detailed mouldings, however imperfect after a century of use) and one of the most important...the home's orientation, facing east/west and all the "living spaces" are located on the sunny side (I will forever find it strange that 'builders' never consider this when planning their massive sub-divisions, apparently they've never read 'A Pattern Language'--but I digress).

Conventional design would dictate or at least lean toward a more traditional design and decor aesthetic for my old home, but for me, it's so important to incorporate many different styles and pieces. For me good design is found in the balance of mixing old and new. It's that juxtaposition of styles, and old and new pieces, that make a room good design, inspired design. In design school, we perfect our ability to design a certain "style" or aesthetic. It's only then, when you've mastered the dexterity to pull together these specific design styles, can you start to play with mixing them. At the risk of sounding trendy (if trendy is what has been around for three years or so---and hundreds of years in the east), in some ways this concept is loosely translated in to what the Japanese call Wabi-Sabi.

Living Walls...Living Art

Living outdoor walls used to be a naturally occurring event...they've now evolved into an art form...

...An art form that you can bring in to your home. For a current project, I've been researching the viability of installing a living wall in a clients living room. It makes sense for many different reasons. First, who doesn't like a little bit of green/life in room. Often times, plants scattered about are forgotten and end up being a sad commentary on one's busy lifestyle. But like other objects, when group together, they can make quite an impact (and are less likely to be ignored). The plants become a piece of art rather than a feeble attempt to bring the outdoors in. If you have children or pets, a living wall installation keeps potentially poisonous plants out of reach, or if you are limited on space, just out of the way. And, of course, there is the obvious benefit of cleaner air (thank you mother nature).

There are small wall planters available on the market like this one (I really love the color and texture of these succulents, plus--bonus--succulents require less water--they are harder to kill!):

I'm really leaning toward this one. These come in multiple sizes (from 32"x51" to as large as 128"x99"). I really like the galvanized metal frames.

There is so much creativity out there, sometimes, I find it overwhelming. There is always a new app, a new website. If I tried out every one of them, I'd never get anything done (I have a hard enough time as it is). That said, I was reluctant to even go to the Pinterest site when I heard about it several months ago, afraid I'd get sucked in and never find my way out. Well, I was half right...I got sucked in. But I'm here to report...IT'S AMAZING and it can actually help ORGANIZE your collections of inspirations, images, ideas, recipes, books...

This post has the capacity to go long...really long, showing all the fab finds on Pinterest, so I'll try and keep it short and simple. My biggest draw was to dig myself out of the bookmark hole I've found myself in. And who am I kidding, I just like pretty (and interesting) pictures and Pinterest addresses both those needs to a T. In a nutshell, Pinterest allows you to catalog the things you love and/or find interesting. You can also peruse your followers boards and pin their images or like them or comment...I'm telling you...LOVE. Oh, and you can search for anything under the sun (well, almost anything) and find great images.

Off to Italy...

It's 3 a.m. and I can't sleep...hummmm...I wonder why? Could it be that I'm about 36 hours away from one of the best vacations of my life, a three week long trip to Italy. I'm. So. Excited!!!

So, in case I don't have time to update the blog (because I'm having way too much fun), here is a quick itinerary:

Week One: Rome

Week Two: Casa Ombuto near Poppi, Italy

Quite possibly the pièce de résistance of the trip, Casa Ombuto is a Tuscan villa that pre-dates 1800 (its original section dates to at least 1642). Set in a secluded hilltop it offers absolute peace and quiet with spectacular views of the surrounding hills and villages.

It won't be quite as lush as these photos, since we're visiting in early Spring. But they've had weeks and weeks of rain and now some really lovely weather that, I'm sure, is really kick-starting the beautiful landscape.

Casa Ombuto

The kitchen where we'll be whipping up some tasty goodness.

While we're staying at Casa Ombuto, we'll be visiting the hill towns, wineries and olive vineyards withing driving distance, since we'll have a car and cooking lessons don't start till 3 p.m.

Week Three: Florence

Jennifer is meeting me in Florence and I am absolutely thrilled...besides my husband (and my mom--who will already be with me), I couldn't think of anyone with whom I would like to enjoy Florence and everything the city has to offer.

Deck Your Halls

It's time to deck the halls and all the other rooms in your house, so I thought I'd share a few tips.

1. Work with what you have. Decorating for the holidays doesn't have to mean red and green. If red and green don't fit in with your current color palette, don't despair. In fact, rejoice!!! Working with the colors already present in your decor can really be a blessing and a unique alternative.

Oh for a book and a shady nook...

I'll tell you a secret. When I was a little girl I wanted to live in a library.

Yes, I was a precocious reader and practiced Endurance Reading until I could devour books like A Stitch in Time in one long sitting, but that's not why I wanted to live among the stacks. Honestly? I love the spines and covers - the color, the embossed gilt leather, the art, the fonts, the way each row in a stack creates its own city skyline. Also? It's the physicality - the heft, size and sound-dampening quality – that makes a book-lined wall a luscious, tempting, comforting vault of forgotten favorite passages, sweet illustrations, beloved recipes, inspiring photographs, manifestos and confidences.

I am an incurable book-hoard with short stacks in every room, big bookcases filled to the brim and boxes still in storage at my parents’ house. And I don’t like to share; I’m not a lender and I have to admit I feel a bit slighted if I do happen to lend a book out and never get it back. Needless to say, when it comes to decorating with books I don't have a problem with quantity. If you do, The Strand bookstore in New York can help. Not Your Grandmother's Wallpaper

Not that grandma's wallpaper is such a bad thing...truth be told, my grandma did have a lot of wallpaper in her house and my favorite, growing up, was this blue and silverfoil paper in the guest bath. When I was a child, I felt like I was taking a bath inside a jewelry box.

That being said, wallpaper (or more accurately wallcovering) has a bad rap. Many people, both in and out of the design/decor industry, think of the bad papers of the 60's and 70's:

I've been dying to use wallcoverings in one of our projects. Well, the first thing you need is a client who is open to using wallcoverings. Now, we do...so, I've been perusing the many many options out there and thought I'd share a few with you. Digital Shelter Mags...A New Crop to Feast Your Eyes On

It didn't necessarily start with the lost of Domino, but the domino effect (sorry couldn't help it) seemed to signal more of a trend than a anomaly as the effect of perhaps an over-saturated industry and poor economy made it's way through the ranks of shelter magazines (and newspapers nationwide). Metropolitan Home--gone, Cottage Living--gone, Southern Accents--bye bye. The closing of these publications probably isn't news to anyone, but I'm encouraged and proud to see that creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, regardless of the sad state of the economy.

Enter bloggers and digital magazines. Apartment Therapy, Design Sponge and several other blogs have been doing very well for a while now, but the emergence of digital magazines is realtively new. Here are a few of my favs (click on the covers to see the latest issue):

I could go on and on...there are so many new publications out there. If you've got a couple of hours to burn, check out Issuu and see what goodies you find.

Converted Barns

While looking for inspiration for the Victorian cottage in Cripple Creek we did this spring (photos coming soon--I hope), I stumbled on Ina Garten's (Barefoot Contessa) converted barn in New York, on the House Beautiful website. These are (some of) my favorite shots.

Inspired by the simple country buildings of Belgium and designed by architect Frank Greenwald.

This image was the inspiration for the lighting in the main kitchen/dining/living room. Our ceilings weren't quite so tall, but the beams and cathedral ceilings are definitely similar.

This photo really has nothing to do with a barn, but I adore that desk.

I would love to see images of that cedar once it ages to a lovely gray. I am also loving those light fixtures (anyone recognize them?).

I would love to have an old barn converted into a second home (or heck, maybe even a first). Here are a few others I've found. Apparently converted barns are very common vacation accommodations in France...which makes complete sense, once you think about it.

Via French Entree, the interiors weren't quite as charming, but definitely promising.

This barn in Limousin, France could use a new window or two, but still completely charming.

This converted barn in Provence (Living, Etc.) has an industrial meets rustic feel...perfect.

How fantastic is that staircase? Granted, with no rail, it's not exactly suitable for small childern or those late nights after visiting with friends, but it might make you rethink that last glass of wine.

The texture of those old stone walls is wonderful.

Lastly, I love the contemporary furnishings juxtaposed with those rustic wood beams in this converted barn in from Ideal Home magazine.

Garden Stools: Overused or A Multi-purpose Piece?

So, I started this post about a year and a half ago. Oops. I left it alone since I thought perhaps the "trend" had passed or would be over very soon. But now, realizing it probably isn't going anywhere, I'm picking it up again. Not to mention my home, and so many out there, is the perfect space (i.e. small) to utilize one of these little beauties.

I don't think you could pick up a shelter mag in the last year or so and NOT find one in at least one layout. So, without further ado...

Senior Living: The Way It Is Meant To Be

With the baby-boomers flooding the senior age bracket over the last decade, there has been a huge focus on Aging in Place and Senior Living. Most of these apartments resemble a slight upgrade from nursing home (think grab bars everywhere). This is not your typical senior apartment. And thank goodness.

When I first started to read this story in the NY Times I, of course, started with the photos...the design was clean, modern and thoughtful...lead by a shelter mag editor...well that makes sense, but wait, the editor of Veranda? This definitely isn't from the pages of Veranda. Dara Caponigro was a founding editor of Domino, oh, okay, things are starting to make sense. Dara (and the rest of the family) did a fantastic job with this apartment in a typical builder-grade senior community. These newer spaces definitely lend themselves more to clean and modern than anything else. (I'm still curious about the shift from Domino to Veranda...while they are not on the exact opposite ends of the spectrum, they're far from similar.)

Here are some of my favorite shots.

They didn't gut the entire apartment, rather, they made big changes where it mattered most. Some of the upgrades included replacing the cheap developer’s flooring with wide planks of white oak in a matte finish. Hollow-core paneled doors (yuck, the worst!) were replaced with plain, solid wood ones and new hardware. And in the kitchen, white Corian counter replaced white laminate counters.

This is senior living, stylish, simple, easy, clean and most of all manageable.-A.W.

Garden Chirp: What's Growing in Denver (the evolution of a city garden)

Well, it's officially the first day of summer. I love this time of year and really, who doesn't (well, I guess maybe the folks in Phoenix)? As I was contemplating this post, I got to thinking that after nearly six years in this little tiny house, our sweat and hard work is really starting to show...(click any of the images for a larger view)

Then when we bought it...(more early pics here)...it's amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do...

...the first winter...a little barren.

When we bought the house, the tree lawn (aka hell strip) was not so much a lawn but a mini brick yard. We eventually pulled up all those bricks (never want to do that again)--about $5000 worth and reused them in the backyard for our patio and raised garden.

We planted a catalpa (you can barely see it to the left of the giant stand of sunflowers), a weeping cherry (you can barely see it to the right of the flag), a crab apple, a maple and an aspen and took out one of the alianthus trees

...and now...

Our biggest project so far this spring (removing more concrete and installing more flagstone).

Trend Chirp: Industrial Wares

Industrial furniture is all the rage (much to the chagrin of one of my BFFs). All you need to do is take one look at Restoration Hardware's most recent catalog.

I particularly relate to this movement because my 120 year old house is located in a neighborhood that was primarily for railroad and manufacturing workers in the late 1800's. I just love the juxtaposition of my ornate Folk Victorian (with its elaborate mouldings), to the simplicity of industrial wares. It also harkens back to a time when everything wasn't made out of plastic and life wasn't so disposable.

Sooo, I was cruising the web looking for industrial lighting for my office...I've seen and like this from Pottery Barn, but I wanted something that was...well, not Pottery Barn.

Although, in the end, I might end up going this direction because this fixture will pump out so much light...which is what I really need. Slap on a dimmer and I am good to go!

My search inevitably landed me in the blogosphere and the next thing I knew, I was on one of my favorite blogs, Velvet and Linen (Brooke had such fantastic style!). Only to discover one of the most fabulous design stores...Peddler's Home Design.

Oh, Peddler's Home Design, how much do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

(By the way, I had the hardest time finding my favorite items; I loved everything!)

Seasonal Chirp: Spring is in the Air

Every time spring rolls around, I'm filled with anticipation, joy and all the ideas for what I'm finally going to do to the yard (and the house for that matter). That pergola on the back flagstone patio (eventually draped with wisteria), the shade friendly flower bed in the side yard, that new fence...With all my grand plans, I usually end up eeking out one or two projects. This happens for a few reasons; I run out funds, energy or time. There is one project in particular that I "came up with" last year, that I really, really, really hope comes to fruition. I want an outdoor daybed...a good place to take a catnap or lounge with my friends and drink wine, mojito, etc. I have the perfect beginnings...several years ago, my aunt gave me an old metal (wrought iron) twin bed frame. It's been pretty much useless in the backyard for about 10 years and it's dying to have a life. It doesn't have the side rails, but that can be easily fixed. So this was my original inspiration:

Which is funny, because that is exactly who will be utilizing the bed about 90% of the time (all my furries).

And white, ha, I wish.

It's hard to tell exactly what is going on here since it's such a tight shot, but a good place to lounge, no doubt.

Also, what a cheery color palette, I really love the addition of pink to the blue/orange.

Textile Chirp: Suzani...Another Classic That You Love or Are You Over It's Trendy-ness?

Here's my take: just like a few things we've posted on (bentwood, ikat, MCM, etc), suzanis have a history and like the others they have all stood the test of time and they will always have a place in someone's home. That being said, can something be done to death, yes--but that is common with these things, and in time the trend will pass and suzanis will become special again. What are your thoughts?

Uuuggghhh. I did it again. I started out sooo strong, then thud (that's the sound of me falling off the blog wagon). Will April be a different story?? Well, I'll try. No promises!
